The switchboard
A switchboard is an assembly of panels responsible for converting large current into smaller current, and directing it through various terminals. It contains switches that allow the electrical redirection to take place. They are fitted with over current and protective devices such as fuses since they involve large electrical current flows. This helps prevent electrocution. Moreover, switchboards are sensitive and contain state of the art metering to monitor the amount of electrical consumption and surges. There are various types of switchboards: electrical switchboards, telephone switchboards, mixing consoles, printed circuit boards among others.
Bus Bars
Usually, every switchboard comes with more than one bus bar. This component is essential for the operation of the switchboard. It is a metallic strip bar responsible for conduction of a substantial current of electricity without causing stress or deformation of the switchboard. Bus bars are preferred to wires because they have a bigger surface area and reduce more power loss. In addition, they come in different shapes which determine their efficiency. For example, hollow or flat shaped bus bars are more prevalent in higher current applications due to their high surface to cross-sectional area ratio. You can find bus bars inside the switchgear or panel boards of your switchboard.
Synchroscope
This is an electrodynamic device used to indicate the extent to which two power systems are synchronized with each other, thus explaining its name. It relies on the interaction of magnetic fields that rotate a pointer that displays the level of frequency differences and phase angles between two power systems. It is safe to connect the power systems, only when the above two quantities are at zero. This helps prevent damage to equipment by high electrical current flow.
Switchgear
It is one of the most important components of the switchboard. It consists of the equipment used to control and protect electrical equipment. These are switches, circuit breakers, and fuses. Their main purpose is to turn off equipment to allow work, such as maintenance, to be done. Moreover, they also help to clear the electrical system of any abnormal currents downstream, by cutting off electric current supply when power surges occur.
